What is gaussian splatting?

Gaussian splatting is a relatively new rendering technique that has quickly changed how we recreate real environments digitally. Instead of building a scene from triangles and textures the way traditional 3D graphics does, the environment is represented by millions of small, soft blobs of colour floating in space. Each blob carries information about position, colour, size and transparency.

Why the result looks real

When the blobs are drawn together they blend into an image that is hard to tell apart from a photograph. Reflections, soft shadows and the small irregularities that make a surface feel physical are preserved, the things usually lost when reality is reduced to polygons. And the source material is ordinary photos or video, which makes the technique accessible without exotic hardware.

What it means in practice

For a reality capture studio it means a scan can be delivered as a photorealistic environment that runs directly in the browser. No heavy download, no dedicated app, just a link. Combined with correct measurements it becomes a tool for documentation, design and communication, not just a visual demo.
